About the exhibitions:

Square of the Distance
Curator: Francis Schanberger, 1628 Guest Curator
Featuring artists: Jane Alden Stevens, Tracy Longley-Cook, Janelle Young and Christine Zuercher

One of the fundamental rules that govern photography is the Inverse Square Law. The intensity of light is inversely proportional to the distance it travels. This exhibition seeks to examine the effect of distance on the act of photographing. This idea of distance can be metaphorical or conceptual. Distance could be physical distance or a distance of memory. Distance’s effect on sharpness or softness on things like shadows or vision. Distance’s effect on color such as the blue of the distance.

Close Contact: Photography, Nature, and the Alternative Process
Curator: Lauren Darpel, 1628 Art Curator from DAAP School of Art
Featuring artists: Linda Alterwitz, Emily Barnett, Anita Douthat, Luke Kindle, and Kirsten Ledbetter

Light is the activator for growth in nature and the activator in both lens-based photography and alternative process photography. In lens-based photography, light is captured and recorded to create an image, so the natural world can be captured in real time. Alternative photographic processes, like cyanotypes and photograms, have been used by early botanists to record plant life by exposing light-sensitive paper with collected objects arranged on top, leaving a silhouette. Today, artists continue to use both lens-based photography and alternative processes that urge artists into close contact with nature, exploring the relationship that still exists with the natural world.

Through their work, the Close Contact artists shed light on our interdependence with the natural world and its remaining mystic qualities that spur investigation and wonder inside ourselves.

I had my remote team all into Cinci for a two day workshop and chose 1628 for our meeting spot. They did an absolutely fantastic job for us. The conference room was great, good tech set up, wifi worked perfectly, bathrooms were clean, easy access to food/drinks, ordered in lunch each day and it was on time with no problems. I'd highly recommend 1628 to anyone who wants a quiet, professional looking space to accommodate your team. - Todd Tribble - 2/14/2022  -

1628 Ltd. was the perfect place to host my friends baby shower for 30 people. I would highly recommend it for your next event. From the booking process to the logistics on the day of the shower, they made sure our event went off without a hitch. The booking process was easy and efficient. We were able to book and pay online. They communicated in a timely manner and answered all of my questions. The space is decorated so nicely, but in a way that would complement any event. The decor is so beautiful we barely needed anything to decorate the space. This alone helps save on cost to an event while still ensuring your guest are impressed! There were more then enough places for guest to sit and enjoy each other (several sofa setting areas and tables) along with places for people to eat and sit to a table. The owner was there the day of the event the entire time! We could not have pulled it off without her! She was literally helping us pull it together before guest arrived making herself totally available for what we needed. They have so many wonderful amenities including a kitchen and dishes.I can’t say enough about the place and the owner. So many of my guest expressed interest in hosting their next event there. It’s the perfect place for your next event! - Tracy Alexander - 6/24/2020

1628 Ltd. provided us the perfect meeting space for a half day manager's retreat. The day was carefully curated to meet all of our needs and the team was so accommodating and helpful from providing refreshments to coordinating ordering, setup and tear down of our catered lunch. We have plenty of places to host meetings at our corporate office but the act of getting us together in a comfortable and completely neutral space allowed us to really concentrate, collaborate and make the most of our time. I can't recommend Tamara and her team at 1628 Ltd. highly enough. We'll be using the space and experience for our quarterly manager retreats going forward! - Brad Slomsky - 6/24/2020

Beautiful co-working space! It's easily my favorite in town. It's woman-owned & operated, in a great location with easy street parking during the day, has plenty of different spaces inside to work out of & has great events. I worked here for a few days while visiting. The owner is attentive and on-site all day. She is right by the door when you enter. The fee is $75/day or $100 for the week. There are several work spaces on 2 levels to choose from. The main level has lots of open spaces and big windows. There are long tables and smaller ones, couches throughout each level and private or more open layouts. There are conference rooms and small offices, as well as open concept seating with desks and office chairs suitable for a laptop and supplies. The wi-fi is easy to set up and fast. There is a fridge on both levels with a large kitchenette on the main level where you can use the microwave, convection oven, freezer, and sink. There is coffee, tea, water and assorted snacks on both levels. Snacks range from sweet to salty. Mugs, creamer, sugar, plates, flatware and cups are provided, as well as some carbonated beverages and refrigerated water in glass jars. Everyone was friendly and the spaces are confortable and spacious. The only drawbacks I noticed are that the upper level is cold (I kept my gloves on all day and wore layers) and if you are not near a window, the spaces can be rather dark. Lamps would help with that problem. If you need to get a lot of work done and noise distracts you, I would recommend this place! - Christina F. - 12/20/2019

I had a week pass to try the place, but only went one day. I didn't have the opportunity to check out the upper level.Beautiful decor. Felt like a living space. Like home. There are conference rooms, but remaining space/open space included some desk-like tables facing a wall, upholstered chairs with side tables and a section of lucite tables with chairs along the windowfront. It felt a little too open/vulnerable for me. No way to take calls or have a conversation without feeling like you'd disturb your neighbor. Intimate like working in a beautifully decorated living room. Which is fine if it's with Co workers rather than strangers. Hard to describe...I prefer the utility of the layout at Union Hall. More conducive to "work", less "home" feel. Quiet work nooks and call booths, tucked away spaces and various zones. More privacy, feels like you can be ducked-off in your own workspace, though visible to others. But that's also a bigger building with lots going on.I didn't feel like I could focus, get into my zone and get work done at 1628- totally My preference/with style and is subjective. But very stylish and beautiful decor. Love the fully stocked, open access kitchen. Free snacks and coffee.I found a parking space right out front, but I could see parking possibly being a bit of a challenge. - Candis Sistrunk - 6/24/2019

1628 Ltd. has a very boutique approach. The space here is absolutely beautiful with plenty of seating areas both downstairs and up. There is a large conference room downstairs with smaller ones available throughout the space as well.

It was very comfortable and it didn't take me long to get cozy, especially with nice amenities like free drinks, coffee, and snacks. You can also order lunch from one of their lunch partners and they will bring it to you once it is delivered. They are big on offering services here that you might not get at other co-working spaces. The wifi was fast and secure with no issues; thumbs up. - Dawn B. - 11/13/2018
